The Burden of Civility
graphite on Arches paper
“For me, portraiture must involve a very direct line to the self-consciousness of the individual observed in addition to their physical being. As humans, we do not only exist in the physical world; there is also the realm of our thoughts, awareness of self, and our perception of reality. We are isolated as individuals, trapped within our own physical bodies and our private thoughts remain secret. To create intimate portraits that unveil this privacy is my favorite challenge.” - Sarah Petruziello
